January 2 - dfree® Devotions for Financial Freedom

Verse
"The Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." Genesis 2:7 (NIV)

Thought
Forbes magazine publishes a list of the top billionaires every year, ranking them by the respective sizes of their net worth. The September 18, 2013 issue of Forbes said this: "Of the billionaires on the 2013 Forbes 400 list, 273 qualify as 'self-made.' The fact that nearly three quarters of the ultra-wealthy individuals highlighted on this year's list began their lives in circumstances far different than the ones they now occupy might be seen as a testament to the kind of access and mobility that is the basis of the American dream."

Many people imagine that the very wealthy have all inherited their wealth. But the information gathered by Forbes indicates that the majority of the billionaires in America actually worked to become wealthy. I know it seems inconceivable at times (especially with the high unemployment rates) that many communities are still experiencing. Our destinies are tied to our willingness to work! We need to look no further than to God to understand that this is a fundamental truth - that life exists because even God was willing to work. God actually got His hands dirty, reached into the dust and made a man.

People who will follow God's example will take something that seems to have no value and make something that has never existed before. That is what God did - it is also what Steve Jobs did with Apple, Oprah Winfrey did with HARPO and Bill Gates did with Microsoft. They made something big out of something basic and now they have billions. But it took work. Hard work. Creative work. Hand dirtying work.

Prayer
"Dear God: Forgive me for believing that my financial freedom would come from anything other than work. Amen."
